Why Bitstamp is graded B
Five binary safety criteria — each one passed or not. The more passed, the safer.

Proof-of-Reserves
Explained, promised, never shipped. Bitstamp wrote in November 2022 that "our aim is to release a proof of reserves audit", and it keeps an explainer page on what PoR is — but four years on there is still no public dashboard and no named PoR auditor. What it does say is that the group "has been audited by a big four global accounting firm on an annual basis since 2016", which is a company audit, not a per-customer reserve attestation, and the firm is not named either. Flexible withdrawal
No platform lock-up. Bitstamp's own staking page lists both products with the Duration Period column reading "Flexible" — Ethereum at 3.10% paid monthly, Cardano at 1.00% paid weekly. Getting the coin itself back still waits on the network's own exit queue, which Bitstamp does not quote a figure for and neither do we. Note the page also says staking is closed to customers in the US, Singapore and Japan. Source →

Insurance Fund
Two layers, both named by Bitstamp itself. Assets in cold storage sit with custodian BitGo under a policy Bitstamp describes as "insurance against theft, loss, or misuse up to $250 million"; on top of that sits Bitstamp's own crime policy, "offered by Paragon International Insurance Brokers in coordination with Woodruff Sawyer, and underwritten by various insurance companies and certain syndicates at Lloyd's of London", which "applies to digital assets held at Bitstamp either offline or online". The current about page still states in the present tense that "our custodians provide insurance for client assets held in cold wallets". Two caveats worth knowing: the $250 million figure is BitGo's custody cover rather than a Bitstamp-run fund, and the crime policy's limit has never been published. Not a deposit guarantee — Bitstamp says plainly elsewhere that it sits outside Singapore's deposit insurance scheme and that nothing covers market losses. Source 1 → Source 2 → Source 3 → Source 4 →

Track record (2+ years incident-free)
Founded 2011 — Robinhood's own announcement of the closing says "Bitstamp was founded in 2011" — which makes it one of the oldest exchanges still running. It is not incident-free: in January 2015 its hot wallets were drained, and Bitstamp's own statement puts the loss at "less than 19,000 BTC" (roughly $5M at the price of the day) while promising that coins held before the suspension "are completely safe and will be fully honored". They were. The criterion asks for two clean years, not for a spotless history, and that breach is eleven years behind us with nothing comparable since. Robinhood closed its acquisition on 2 June 2025. Source 1 → Source 2 →

Your money, this pair
How much will you earn?
Method: monthly compounding (1 + APR/12)ⁿ, where APR is the exchange's stated rate. The realized 12-month return is slightly higher due to reinvestment. Rates may change. Not financial advice.

How ETH earns on Bitstamp
When you deposit ETH into Bitstamp's earn product you receive 3.1 % APY as a Earn rate. The platform puts the asset to work and shares the yield — your balance grows without you doing anything.
This is a base rate, not a promotional teaser: it's what an ordinary deposit actually earns. Bitstamp carries a YieldScope safety grade of B, so weigh the yield against platform risk — a higher rate on a weaker grade is not automatically a better deal.
Rates on ETH move with lending demand and market conditions. We re-check them daily and keep a history, so you can see whether today's number is unusually high, unusually low, or steady.
